a Graduate Student Position
A Graduate Student position involving ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic studies of photochemistry and dynamics of small polyatomic molecules in the liquid-phase is available immediately in the laboratory of Alexander N. Tarnovsky at BGSU.
The objective is to trace the electronic and vibrational reorganization, following the excited state evolution, including the characterization of conical intersections, and to develop an entry point for quantum control of femtosecond processes in solution.
In our research, we use state-of-the-art experimental methods of ultrafast laser spectroscopy, primarily the deep-UV-through-near-IR pump/probe method with 100 fs time resolution (1 fs = 10-15 s). Other techniques used include laser pump/x-ray absorption probe and time-resolved IR spectroscopies. A femtosecond stimulated Raman set-up that uses the recently acquired 30-fs amplified laser system is under development.
The computational characterization of conical intersections is handled though intradepartmental collaboration (Prof. Massimo Olivucci).
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related major from an accredited college or university. Preference will be given to candidates with solid background in physical chemistry/chemical physics.
