Где-то что-то преувеличено, где-то немного утрировано, где-то достаточно поставить слово "почти" в тезис и будет чистая правда, но это не причина "не идти в GS" - это особенность GS. Так что можно сказать, что там ПОЧТИ правда.
Если вас пугает, что там написано, то идти действительно не стоит. Нужно очень хотеть этого, чтобы успешно пережить и при этом получая удовольствие...

Я осилила только пролистать половину заголовков, и ничего интересного для себя там не увидела. Lolcat, если Вас волнует какой-то конкретный аспект/пост из этого блога, давайте обсудим.
В целом же, я бы сказала, что в любом роде деятельности есть свои плюсы и свои минусы. Всегда, когда я вижу статью про то, как плохо в градшколе, у меня возникает одна и та же мысль: больше половины минусов можно перенести ещё на десяток профессий (или родов деятельности). Какие-то вещи всегда явно утрированы, какие-то люди всё и всегда видят в чёрном свете. Поэтому я не вижу здесь ничего такого, на что следовало бы обратить внимание.

1. The subject of a 2002 cover story in Time magazine, the grief that Sylvia Ann Hewlett calls the “crisis of childlessness” has affected a generation of successful people who made career a priority over family. To make matters worse, graduate school has the effect of putting off both family and career.
2. Consider the academic hierarchy (see Reason 3), in which prestige matters much more than objective measurements of educational quality. If your university is perceived to be less than prestigious, you will be at a distinct disadvantage on the academic job market regardless of the merits of your work. As a general rule, when you complete a PhD, you can only expect to be hired by institutions that are less prestigious than the university at which you earned your doctorate. There are people with Harvard PhDs teaching in Lubbock, Bakersfield, and Tuscaloosa (see Reason 16). Where might a PhD take you?
3. When the supply of workers exceeds the demand for labor, workers' wages tend to fall. This is the situation in academe. There are far too many PhDs produced every year for the academic job market to absorb them all (see Reason 55), and universities fill most of their teaching positions with poorly paid graduate students and adjuncts (see Reason 14). While the "glut" of PhDs seems to be slowly attracting more and more attention, it is in fact nothing new. The problem has existed for decades. With so many PhDs on the job market (and more arriving every year), there is little reason for universities or other employers to pay a premium to hire them. In monetary terms, the value of a PhD is steadily declining.
4. After a while, graduate school begins to limit your options. Working toward a PhD takes so long (see Reason 4) and prepares you for a line of work that is so specific (see Reason 29) that it can leave you unprepared for work outside of academe. In most cases, a 35 year-old PhD is of less interest to potential employers than a 25 year-old with a few years of relevant work experience. More often than not, “overqualified” is just a nice way of saying “unqualified.”
5. You’ll probably have to spend some time as an adjunct in academic purgatory, where the pay is so low and the work is so unstable that it can be a struggle to make ends meet.
6. The consequences of offending your colleagues and superiors in any way can be dire, because until you have tenure (see Reason 71) your employment is insecure; you are easily replaced. For the same reason, untenured college instructors often endure humiliating working conditions (see Reason 14).
7. According to the National Education Association, the average starting salary for a teacher in Mississippi is $30,090. Meanwhile, you will be one of the lucky graduate students to be given a teaching assistantship with an annual stipend of $15,000.
8. The real purpose of the conference is to provide speakers with another line for their CVs, to which they all must add lines constantly (see Reason 38). For them, every conference is a gathering of competitors (see Reason 2).
9. Unfortunately, an assistant professorship is only a temporary, probationary position that lasts a maximum of 5-7 years. Toward the end of that period, an assistant professor applies for tenure, which is (more or less) a guarantee of permanent employment. The requirements for tenure vary, but you are generally expected to have published at least one book (sometimes two)—a feat made ever more difficult by the realities of the academic publishing business (see Reason 34)—as well as a number of journal articles. You may have a second chance to apply for tenure, but if you do not have tenure by the end of your probationary employment period, you will be cleaning out your desk and saying goodbye to your colleagues (who voted to fire you).
10. Student evaluations have turned the tables on college instructors. If you are a graduate-student instructor, an adjunct instructor, or a junior faculty member, your continued employment depends upon favorable student evaluations. As a classroom teacher, how do you satisfy your students in an age of unprecedented distraction? To one degree or another, you have to entertain them. You know that your job depends on it, and you also know that your students will post anonymous evaluations of your performance on the Internet. (In how many jobs does that happen?). The causes of grade inflation are not hard to figure out.
11. Being a TA requires an extraordinary amount of time — time that you cannot devote to doing what you need to do to graduate — so the indignity tends to last for years.
12. I tell my students to plan their dissertation committees with the job search in mind. They should pick professors who not only are skilled in the field of the dissertation, but who also have national and international reputations. Letters from those professors will count a great deal. And as these things go, letters from full professors will count more than letters from associate professors, and so on down the line.

Мне кажется, что страшили и пугали есть всегда и везде. Например, мне с моими баллами за гре можно было бы вообще никуда не подавать сидеть и молчать в тряпку в надежде пересдать получше. Особенно посмотрев сколько тут на градусе народ набирает и сколько в град кафе пишут. С чем я согласна - трудно с образованием университета из низа сотни попасть в топ, наверное очень сложно. Практически невозможно, но. Возможно все, вопрос стараний и таланта. А что плохого в том чтобы работать в институте где статусом чем твой? Ничего, по моему. В одной очень уважаемой ассоциации я знаю есть в руководстве женщина которая работает профессором в университете который за сотню выходит. Это не мешает ей вести исследования вместе с профессорами из первой десятки. Встречают по одежке, конечно, это касается и вуза. Но провожают по уму и публикациям. Мне кажется, что ум и хватка залог успеха в научной среде, особенно в штатах, где мгновенно замечают интересные публикации и мозги.

По поводу личной жизни. У меня две однокурсницы уехали в штаты давно в магистратуру, именно в аспирантуре обе вышли замуж и получили грин карты кстати:) так что это вообще спорный крайне тезис. Что денег не много это точно, о в России их не будет вообще. Вообще для меня сам факт жизни в штатах, стране уникальной по моему опыту для комфорта жизни, играет важнейшую роль. О чем важно думать, конечно, о реальности возможности получения рабочей визы при желании оставаться там потом. В общем ничего вообще страшного не вижу. В России быть аспирантом значит не учиться а вечерами и по выходным писать диссер и проводить исследование если нет кого то кто тебе дает деньги на жизнь...
